Pooley Bridge – Ullswater
Pooley bridge, erected in 1764 and replacing an earlier bridge from the 16th century,[1] collapsed on 6 December 2015 when Cumbria was hit by heavy flooding as a result of Storm Desmond.
A temporary replacement bridge was opened on 20 March 2016. The Pooley Bridge in this image is the 1764 bridge, before storm Desmond destroyed it.
Ullswater is the second largest lake in the English Lake District, being approximately nine miles long and 0.75 miles wide with a maximum depth of slightly more than 60 metres (197 ft). Many regard Ullswater as the most beautiful of the English lakes and it is a popular tourist destination. It is a typical Lake District narrow “ribbon lake” formed after the last ice age when a glacier scooped out the valley floor and when the glacier retreated, the deepened section filled with melt water which became a lake.
