Honister Buttermere Lake District Print
Honister Pass is a mountain pass in the Lake District in Cumbria, England. It links Seatoller, in the valley of Borrowdale, to Gatesgarth at the southern end of Buttermere. The Honister Slate Mine in Cumbria is the last working slate mine in England. Quarrying for Westmorland green slate has been taking place in the area since 1728. Buttermere lake, the low level walk round the lake is a delight. Especially if it begins and ends in the hamlet of Buttermere itself. Certainly there is ample opportunity to eat, rest and stay. Many popular high level walks start from the valley with amazing views.
Mountain scenes are something I like doing a lot, especially with Oils. There’s nothing like getting to a beautiful view and resting to take it all in. Also it calms the mind and fills me with great enthusiasm for painting. A walk is always guaranteed to make me feel creative. My style of painting is one which has developed over time and is still evolving with each new painting. I try to capture a sense of realism, of being there, with out being a slave to photo realism. It’s also important to keep pushing the boundaries of what your comfortable with, not to settle into a formula of what works.
