Days End at Wasdale Original Oil Painting
Wasdale is a valley in the western part of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. The River Irt flows through the valley to its estuary at Ravenglass. A large part of the main valley floor is occupied by Wastwater, the deepest lake in England (258 feet). Set amidst yew trees in the Viking fields at the head of Wasdale, near the deepest lake and the highest mountain in England, is the little St Olaf’s Church, possibly the smallest church in England. The church is roofed with massive slate tiles over beams that are claimed to come from wrecked Viking ships.
Wastwater the Lake is almost 3 miles long and more than one-third mile wide. It is the deepest lake in England at 258 feet, and is owned by the National Trust. It is one of the finest examples of a glacially ‘over-deepened’ valley. The surface of the lake is about 200 feet above sea level, while its bottom is over 50 feet below sea level. Wastwater is perhaps the most awe-inspiring of all the lakes. Surrounded by mountains, Red Pike, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain.
